Pombrotho was built from whānau, whakapapa and lived experience.

We exist because too many whānau are expected to navigate poverty, housing insecurity, state systems, education, justice, care and protection, trauma and disconnection through services that treat each issue as though it stands alone.

Whānau do not live in separate departments. Their solutions cannot be built that way either.

Built to support whānau authority

Pombrotho brings traditional Māori values, standards and ways of working together with modern technology, structured education, advocacy and professional support. The purpose is not to manage whānau forever. It is to help create the stability, knowledge, confidence and practical pathways through which whānau can exercise rangatiratanga and mana motuhake.

Our kaupapa includes connected strands of work:

• Pombrotho Consultancy — whānau advocacy, navigation, planning and practical support.
• Papakāinga Wānanga — pathways for whenua reconnection, whānau planning, governance, occupation and papakāinga development.
• Hoea Rā — culturally grounded learning and prevention work that strengthens responsibility, identity, capability and connection.
• Resolution Facilitation — supported processes for facing conflict, restoring communication and finding durable whānau-led solutions.
• Te Ora o Te Ao — wellbeing grounded in the relationship between people, whānau, whenua, culture and the wider world.
• Pombrotho Foundation — the long-term pathway for resourcing and protecting kaupapa that should not depend solely on whether whānau can afford help.

Papakāinga is more than housing

Our papakāinga vision is not simply about putting houses on land. It is about rebuilding the conditions in which whānau can grow with stability, safety, education, connection and responsibility.

A papakāinga must protect the whenua, support the people living upon it and remain accountable to the generations who come after us. Development without whakapapa, governance and long-term protection is not enough.

Education is part of every solution

We believe learning happens through structured study, lived experience, whānau knowledge, tikanga, te reo Māori, whakapapa, history, law, creativity, wellbeing and practical life skills.

Our people should not have to leave who they are at the door in order to learn, receive support or build a future.

Why Pombrotho was built

Pombrotho was built because we could see what was missing. It continues to evolve because our whānau, communities and responsibilities continue to teach us what must come next.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is not background history to this work. It is a living constitutional foundation. Whānau authority is not an optional cultural extra. It is central to any solution intended to last.

We are building practical pathways from vulnerability to stability, from disconnection to belonging, and from system dependence toward rangatiratanga and mana motuhake.
