Māoritanga: The Values Pombrotho Was Built On
by Shannon Thompson — Founder of Pombrotho
Pombrotho was on Māori values, standards and ways of working because often whānau need more than another service designed around a system.
Pombrotho was built from whakapapa, lived experience and the understanding that whānau are not files, referrals or problems to be managed. They are people with knowledge, responsibilities, aspirations, whakapapa and their own authority.
We work alongside whānau experiencing high and complex pressures, particularly where basic living needs, stability, safety and access to the right support have not been properly met.
Our approach brings mātauranga Māori, tikanga, whakapapa and whanaungatanga together with modern education, technology, professional services and lawful advocacy. The purpose is to support whānau to identify what they need, make their own decisions and move toward rangatiratanga and mana motuhake.
There is value in a breath, for it is life itself.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values carried through Kīngitanga sit at the heart of Pombrotho. We are whānau driven, mokopuna focused and committed to leaving this world better than we found it.
The foundations I built Pombrotho upon
Āwhinatanga
We work with whānau, individually and collectively, to identify what is needed and support access to the services, resources and practical assistance required to meet those needs.
Whanaungatanga
We support whānau to build plans that strengthen stability, relationships and long-term development. Those plans belong to the whānau. Our role is to help turn their priorities into practical action.
Kotahitanga
We create space for whānau members to recognise shared aspirations, make decisions together and move with unity while still respecting individual voices and responsibilities.
Rangimārie
We help protect the dignity and mana of whānau while historical issues, conflict and harm are faced honestly. Resolution should create greater safety and clarity, not further damage.
Manaakitanga
We connect whānau with available services, resources, education and funding pathways. Where the right support does not yet exist, we help identify what needs to be built.
Wairuatanga
We recognise the importance of spiritual, cultural and customary wellbeing. Whānau must be able to reconnect with the beliefs, practices and communities that strengthen their mauri.
Pono
We support honest self-development and learning, including te reo Māori, tikanga, whakapapa, pepeha and the histories that help our people understand who they are and where they stand.
Aroha
We encourage compassion, accountability and care in everyday whānau life. Aroha does not require silence about harm. It asks us to act in ways that protect the future while preserving the mana of our people.
Rangatiratanga
Whānau are supported to determine their own direction, identify and resolve their own issues, seek further education and exercise leadership over their lives. Rangatiratanga is not something Pombrotho gives to whānau. It already belongs to them.
Whānau mana remains with whānau
Our consultants, kaimahi and whānau navigators bring lived experience, community relationships and practical knowledge to the work. We also seek appropriate guidance from specialist services, legal advisers and public agencies so that our work remains responsible, professional and lawful.
The aim is not to create dependence on Pombrotho. It is to help prevent the loss of whānau mana—and, where systems or circumstances have weakened it, to support its restoration.
These values are not branding added around Pombrotho. They are why I built it, how I built it and the standard by which its work must always be measured.
Whānau led. Culturally grounded. Mokopuna focused. Tīpuna driven.
